Angel Bat Dawid is a Black American composer, clarinetist, pianist, bandleader, educator, DJ, recording artist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. Dawid’s acclaimed debut album The Oracle (2019) offers a profound exploration of contemporary Black life and earned accolades from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and The Guardian. Known for her dynamic performances, she has composed significant works including Requiem for Jazz and Peace: A Suite for Yoko Ono’s Sky Landing Installation.
As the leader of the ensemble Tha Brothahood and the all-women's group Sistazz of the Nitty Gritty, her live album was featured in NPR Music’s “Best Albums of 2020.” In addition to her artistic endeavors, she imparts knowledge through her “Great Black Music” course at Old Town School of Folk Music, and serves as a clarinetist with Damon Locks' Black Monument Ensemble. Angel also hosts a monthly show on NTS Radio.
Recognized in Pitchfork's “25 Next” list in 2022 and celebrated as The Chicago Tribune’s “Chicagoan of the Year,” Angel has performed at prestigious venues such as the Newport Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, and Carnegie Hall, as well as in festivals across Europe and Japan. She contributed to the score for season two of Terence Nance's HBO series Random Acts of Flyness and serves as the 2024 Artist in Residence at Northwestern University’s Black Arts Consortium.
