Carolee Schneemann is a pioneering feminist artist who has been working since the 1960s, creating video, body, and performance art. Schneemann moved to New York in the 1960s, becoming part of the influential Judson Dance Theater as the first visualist to work with the group. Schneemann’s work is deeply personal, and she often uses herself in performances that present the female body as a site of action rather than passive objectification, fearlessly confronting issues of sexuality and gender. She has taught at numerous universities.
Carolee Schneemann passed away in 2019.
