Dave McKenzie creates videos, performances, sculptures, and installations that explore notions of public space, race, identity, and the role of the artist. He received a BFA from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 2000. McKenzie uses humor and humble actions to respond to social and political situations. In We Shall Overcome (2004), he walked around Harlem dressed as its newest famous inhabitant, Bill Clinton, “in an effort to make visible the image that people claimed they were missing.” He has created self-portraits as a life-size piñata, a papier-mâché headed figure handing out bobble-headed dolls of himself, and as a Macy’s parade float (in a video).
