Gary Simmons

Sculptor and Installation Artist

New York, New York

Gary Simmons’s drawings and installations trace and selectively remove elements of individual and collective narratives through the act of erasure. He addresses memory, history, and personal experiences through abstract references to a fragmented past. For Simmons, erasure is not only a physical act but also one that has a conceptual framework. Although society may attempt to eradicate the memories of past injustices, evidence of those events remains, haunting us and shaping the present. His current work consists of site-specific projects that refer to architecture, film, theoretical texts, and science fiction.
