Washington, DC

Jen, a Two-Spirit, Cherokee person with warm light skin, shoulder-length brown hair, narrow square glasses, and defined brows, smiles at the camera. Jen wears red lipstick, colorful beaded earrings, and a bright red top.

Jen Deerinwater is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, bisexual, Two Spirit, multiply-disabled journalist and organizer who covers the issues Deerinwater's communities face with an intersectional lens. Deerinwater is a contributor at Truthout, Founding Executive Director of Crushing Colonialism, and a New Economies Reporting Project fellow. Deerinwater came to writing and photography at an early age, but didn't begin working in journalism until her late 30s. After a decade working in the trenches of US politics, Deerinwater was weary of working to uphold the colonizer’s system and felt that journalism was the path to revolution that must be walked.

Deerinwater's work can be found in publications such as Bitch, Rewire.News, and In These Times, as well as in the anthologies Two-Spirits Belong Here and Disability Visibility. Deerinwater has been interviewed for numerous outlets and was named a 2019 Champion of Pride by The Advocate.

Donor -Disability Futures is supported by Ford Foundation and Mellon Foundation.
