Mark Handforth creates sculpture from things on the street—highway signs, lampposts, fluorescent lights, and even a Vespa. He alters the objects by bending, twisting, or embellishing them, then places them out of context in galleries or odd public spaces. The results are slightly surreal and surprising, coaxing viewers into reconsidering the often overlooked. Handforth received his degree from the Slade School of Art in London in 1992 and settled in Florida later that year. He has had solo exhibitions at the Modern Institute, Glasgow; the Kunsthaus, Zurich; and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. His work has been included in numerous group exhibitions, including the 2004 Whitney Biennial.
