Seed and Bloom: Detroit

Seed and Bloom: Detroit supports Detroit-based, BIPOC artists growing their artistic practices into sustainable organizations and businesses that increase access to arts and culture programming.

Eight people pose smiling for the camera.
Tan square with a geometric drawing of a single flower leaning slightly to the left in the center. There are three circular rows of petals that get successfully smaller as they move towards the center of the flower, which is a black circle. The petals of the flower are made of black circles that overlap one another. The portions of the circles that overlap are hollowed out, and have the same tan color as the background. The stem extends from the center of the flower and all the way down to the text “Seed and Bloom: Detroit” written in a large serif typeface with “Supporting Artists in Their Neighborhoods” written underneath that in a smaller sans-serif typeface. On the upper-left corner, a smaller logo appears of a “G” and “F” overlaid on top of each other with “Gilbert Family Foundation” written underneath.

Overview

In its inaugural year, Seed and Bloom: Detroit supports ten fellows in a three-year cohort program, receiving $180,000 in flexible funding for their projects, and access to technical assistance via Strategic Planning Partners, Artspace, and more. In partnership with the Gilbert Family Foundation, Seed and Bloom: Detroit supports grantees to deepen their impact within Detroit’s neighborhoods.

How We Collaborate

In partnership with the Gilbert Family Foundation and the Kresge Foundation, USA has designed a program that strives to address key questions such as: What are the locally specific needs of artist enterprises in Detroit? How can supporting artist enterprises benefit artists and their communities in Detroit more broadly? USA works with Artspace and Strategic Planning Partners for their experience in building cohorts in Detroit, as technical support providers for Seed and Bloom: Detroit fellows, and more. 8 Bridges Workshop serves as USA’s evaluation partner, supporting a formative learning process and program iteration as we strive always to reflect upon and improve how our work supports artists.
